Lana’s Battleground Promo Causes Outrage
Despite speculation yesterday (which I always thought was born out of wishful thinking) WWE didn’t tone down the Lana and Rusev characters at Battleground … in fact they’ve caused more outrage, with Lana possibly referring to downed Flight MH17 with the following line:
The UK Daily Mail and several US news outlets picked up the promo and took WWE to task for it.
While I don’t want to turn this in to a political rant, there are number of points here that I think need to be addressed, since so many other sites and their writers have jumped on the bandwagon.
The most glaring point being that there hasn’t been a formal investigation as to who was even responsible. Lana was absolutely correct in her statement “You Blame Russia”.
Ok, there’s some smoke there, but at this point the West is blaming Russia without the evidence. So to be outraged over something you don’t even know to be true is asinine.
Furthermore she didn’t mock the victims or even name the incident directly.
Her statement was no more outrageous than the debates playing out in the news, with some people blaming Russia, and others pointing out that the evidence is not forthcoming. What’s the big deal?
Then there’s the obvious hypocrisy. If you’re outraged over what Putin may (or may not) have been responsible for, you should be equally outraged at Obama and his drone strikes that have been killing innocent civilians in the Middle-East for years, or the US’s blind support of Israel.
At the end of the day it’s wrestling, and they’re going to mirror the lowest common denominator in society. Putin Bad, USA Good. I’m more annoyed at the simplistic and stereotypical nature of the characters, rather than Lana’s promo. If anything WWE are painting Russians in a bad light, when the average Joe Russia is no more responsible for its leaders warmongering than the average Joe USA.
UPDATE … WWE released the following statement:
Last night’s segment during WWE’s Battleground event was in no way referring to the Malaysia Airlines tragedy. The storyline with characters Rusev and Lana has been a part of WWE programming for more than 3 months. WWE apologizes to anyone who misunderstood last night’s segment and was offended.

Brock Lesnar and More RAW News
As previously noted Brock Lesnar is set for tonight’s RAW. Heyman wrote on Twitter:
WWE.com are hyping the following 5 points for the show:
– Having failed to defeat Mr. Money in the Bank in an official WWE bout, Ambrose will no doubt be hungry for retribution against his Authority.
– How The Miz will commemorate his third Intercontinental Title reign?
– Now that Jericho has defeated Wyatt — much to the delight of legions of Jerichoholics — how will The Eater of Worlds seek to spread his macabre message?
– Will Swagger and Zeb unleash their counter-attack on Raw?
– With the Cenation leader still in possession of sports-entertainment’s most prestigious prize, how will The Authority respond?
RVD Missed PPV Due To Injury
RVD was pulled for the IC Battle Royal last night because of an undisclosed injury. While WWE.com hasn’t revealed the exact issue, they did acknowledge it.
