WWE today announced their financial results for the fourth quarter (ending December 31, 2014). Overall revenue increased 19% to $140.5 million from $118.4 million at the same point last year.
Although the company actually recorded a Net loss of $1.6 million, this was expected because of the transition to the Network, and the results are actually much better than projected. This time last year they lost $7.9 million, so you can see the improvement.
The WWE Network added 85,000 subscribers during the quarter, representing a 12% increase from September 30, and reached 816,000 subscribers at year-end. Follwing the Rumble this reached over 1 million, their break-even point. Anything over that is profit.
During the conference call Vince McMahon brushed off the #CancelWWENetwork hashtag, saying it was just a vocal minority who didn’t follow through with their threat. He said fans are actually invested and the publicity was good publicity. He described the Rumble reaction as fans being upset because “Santa Claus didn’t arrive at that PPV.”
Chael Sonnen Wants WWE Announcer Role?
Despite an official denial there are still strong rumors that MMA star Chael Sonnen is meeting with WWE over Wrestlemania weekend. It’s believed that Gerald Brisco set up an informal meeting with Sonnen and Kevin Dunn about the controversial star becoming an announcer.
He’s a big wrestling fan who has wanted to do something with WWE for a long time. During his active years many people compared his persona and trash talking to that of a good pro wrestler.
